PRIZE MONEY FOR AMU SOUTHERN AFRICAN OFF-ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP (SORC)

The 2010 AMU Southern African Off-road Championship (SORC) for motorcycle and quad competitors from South Africa and Botswana as well as Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, has received a huge boost with prize money in excess of R60 000 that will be up for grabs at the end of the championship.

Jimmy Loubser, owner of one of South Africa’s top Toyota vehicle dealerships, Ermelo Toyota, has initiated the prize fund and the top three finishers of each of the SORC classes (B1, B2 and B3) will each walk away with a substantial reward.

This comes on the run-up to the Ermelo Toyota 400 (12 and 13 February), the opening round of the 2010 South African national off-road motorcycle and quad championships that will also form the first round of the four legs of the SORC.

The second round of the African Motorcycle Union (AMU) SORC will take place on 3 April in Namibia while the third round will coincide with the Mafikeng event on 8 May. This event will also form the championship round of the AMU Continental Championship that is open for more African countries to compete in.

The penultimate round will be held in Zimbabwe on June 5th with the last race in the series the Zambia event on 18 September.

Last year the competition in the AMU SORC was fierce with the strongest riders in each competitive country aiming for the title. It was, however, committed South African racers that have won two of the three classes last year with Dillon Inggs the Class B1 (for motorcycles with engines smaller than 200cc) winner and Vincent Loubser the Class B3 (quad category) victor.

Class B2 (motorcycles with engine sizes bigger than 200cc) was won by Namibia’s Henner Rusch and in total almost a 100 entrants from participating countries competed in these well-organised events.

The AMU SORC title is seen as quite an achievement on any racing CV as it takes a little bit of extra effort, but the experience to race in different countries and to be part of the off-road racing communities from ‘neighbouring’ countries are worth all the effort.
